Hi Rusl,

I still like the belts, but you're right that they need the strap across the chest so they don't fall off the shoulders. My son does a lot of twisting and turning—to look around or to talk to me—and I'm always reaching down to pull a strap back up to his shoulder.

Thanks for posting this. Very Helpful to write all the details. I'm currently designing the seat belts for my unnamed cargo bike. http://www.bicyclefamily.ca/welcome/2010/11/milestone-first-test-ride-of-cargo-bike/ After having used your new seatbelts what is your verdict?

I was thinking something less elegant - like wrapping it in duct tape or anything that would be softer than the toes of my shoes - but they did use to sell this stuff called, I think, something like Plati-Dip that was sort of like a think paint/plastic goo into which you could dip metal tool handles and what not; if it's still around that would probably do better what you suggest than the epoxy,

We're in NE PDX looking at buying a Bakfiets, and when we had a rental over the weekend, one of my first thoughts was, well that's sure going to screw up a lot of shoes. My thought was to put some sort of rubber cover on it (honestly, I'm not crazy about the entire latch system and would probably look at a way to replace it), but there's also a product called Tuff Toe that's basically an epoxy

It looks to me like the front of the storage box might be removable by sliding between the rails that are visible on the sides of the cargobox. If it were latched/locked, it doesn't seem like you'd be able to remove it because of the angles involved with the arc of the lid/seat and of the front piece.

At least that's how I'd build it.

I like the under seat trunk. My father, someone with just the type of woodworking skills of which you speak, said that my bike should use that space underneath and he also said a trunk. The only drawback is that that space could not be fully retrieved when the seat is up (unless the storage box front was also removable in some fashion--hmmmm, that will lead to some ideas).

I totally have that same wear pattern. In fact. I have similar shoes as the ones in the photo and had to restitch the front toe. I may have to apply a bit of Keen-like rubber on the toe for some toe-tally perfect bakFEETS.

That's the correct remedy for a soaked and stretched saddle. be sure to goop it up with a non-softening leather conditioner/proofing agent like Proofide, Sno-seal, Obenauf's, etc. periodically. If you apply liberally to top and bottom, let sit overnight and then wipe off excess, it will tolerate wettings better. Best to keep a simple bag to cover it in the rain.
